The print was made by Van der Schley for Antoine Francois Prevost d’Exile’s Histoire Generale des Voyages, published by Pierre de Hondt in The Hague 1746-1789. It is included in volume VIII, where it accompanies the part on Sri Lanka (Ceylon). The part on Sri Lanka was largely derived from Robert Knox’s An Historical Relation of the Island Ceylon (1681), which was also illustrated with a plate showing the execution by elephant. Van der Schley modelled his composition after that example, but made drastic artistic improvements. His drawing is of a much higher artistic quality compared to the rudimentary manner in which the execution by elephant was made in Knox’s work. Another difference is the other execution methods that are depicted. In Knox’s illustration the other victim was tied to a pole, but in the present design by Van der Schley one man is impaled and another hung from a tree. He also included dogs about to eat the corpses, for extra gruesome effect.
The image had a strong influence on how the West perceived Sri Lankan and Indian culture. The Histoire Generale des Voyages was the great standard work on non-Western cultures of the Enlightenment, consisting of no less than fifteen folio volumes, all thoroughly illustrated. It was translated into various languages and multiple subsequent editions appeared. The present depiction of cruel executions contributed to the image of a dangerous and savage place. Van der Schley seemed to feel the need to scare his audience even more than his example in Knox’s book did.

Cf. Though he amassed a large collection of flora and fauna much of it was later confiscated by the Paraguayan government. He made extensive trips during which he observed the physical-geographical as well as the social and ethnographic situation. In 1825 he returned to Europe. His findings were posthumously published in the well-known Reise nach Paraguay in den Jahren 1818 bis 1826 (Aarau, 1835). Initially featured in the third edition of 1716, this edition marks the second appearance of the list. Though artistically of somewhat inferior quality, the portrait of Semedo intriguingly features additional books, portraying him not only as a physician but also as a prolific author. Subsequent editions reverted to the original text and portraits, rendering this fourth edition a unique anomaly.

The author, Semedo, served as a physician to the Royal family while also running a successful apothecary business. In his principal work, Semedo adeptly incorporated influences from non-Western regions while adhering to European conventions, seamlessly integrating citations from African and South Asian healers into the nearly 1000-page compendium. For instance, Semedo cataloged entries for Virginian snake root as a treatment for rattlesnake bites, as well as "Tambuape" and "Jamvarandim" roots used by indigenous Bahian peoples as antidotes (see: Berry, p. 41).

Condition: binding worn, preserving the original endpapers. This is preceded by an introduction to cosmography and geography. The illustrations show maps, cities, people, and particularities of the places that are described. Some interesting examples of illustrations are a portrait of Inca Emperor Atabalipa, three plates showing West Indies plantations, the Native American Powhatan chief and village of Pomejok, two Samogitians, a map of the Davis Strait, the Dalai Lama, several maps of India and Arabia, the Nile with crocodiles, and much, much more.

The first edition appeared in Paris in 1683 as "Description de l'univers," and soon after, the hundreds of copper plates for the illustrations were transferred to Jan David Zunner in Frankfurt, who published the first edition of the German translation in 1684, with German text engraved in the plates. He then published the second French edition in 1685, with the German text still in the plates. The second German edition that we offer here was also printed in Frankfurt, but 34 years later by Anton Heinscheidt for Johann Adam Jung. They used the same plates again and added portraits of the rulers of that time. By then the plates had become quite worn, so they were re-engraved by at least three German artists: Vogel, W.C. Drucker, and Eggelhoff. Still, the plates have visible wear and the printing was not done very well in some cases due to unclear strikes and plates that were not cleaned properly.

This edition has many more plates than the first German and second French editions printed at Frankfurt (see VD17 39:129237P; 3:306499P). We traced no definitive reference for the total number of plates this edition should have, but we count 645 apparently without any missing. Copies with the same number of plates as the one we offer here are very rarely found. Of the multiple copies that are recorded at auction, all have fewer than 645 plates. The nearest being a copy sold in 1991 by Sotheby’s with 613 plates (for GBP 4,290).

Index of plates in this copy:

Vol. 1: 112 numbered plates + 1 frontispiece + 1 portrait + 1 (87B) = 115

Vol. 2: 133 numbered plates + 1 frontispiece + 3 portraits = 137

Vol. 3: 101 numbered plates + 1 frontispiece + 3 unnumbered plates = 105

Vol. 4: 130 numbered plates + 1 frontispiece + 8 portraits = 139

Vol. 5: 142 numbered plates + 1 frontispiece + 5 portraits + 1 unnumbered plate = 149

Condition: Volume 2: minor worming in blank corners of first few pages. Camerarius enriched Matthioli’s work by replacing the original illustrations with more accurate woodcuts based on drawings by the Swiss naturalist Conrad Gessner (1516–1565). She was trained by her parents, the pastellist Susanna de la Croix and the celebrated still-life painter Jan van Os, alongside her brothers Pieter Gerardus van Os and Georgius Jacobus Johannes van Os. Notably, it is the only known example in which she signed on the left, following Jan van Os’s customary placement. All other known works are signed M.M. van Os or a variant thereof, consistently on the right. The placement of the signature in this instance suggests that she was still closely aligned with her father’s practice at the time of its creation. The style of the lettering, particularly the formation of the capital 'M', is consistent with her authenticated right-side signatures, supporting its attribution. Her later decision to sign on the right appears to have been a deliberate effort to distinguish her work from that of her father and assert her own artistic identity. In this light, the present work likely constitutes a breakthrough piece—one that captures the moment she emerged from her father’s influence and established herself as an artist in her own right. It is, therefore, a rare and historically significant painting, offering a unique glimpse into a formative period in Maria van Os’s career.

This painting is a beautiful and refined example of Maria Margaretha van Os’s mastery of still-life painting. The career of the wonderful etcher De Hooghe was intricately connected to that of William III, who rose to vast power, ultimately resulting in the crown of England. De Hooghe supported William III by etching an array of political prints. William III purchased the medieval castle Het Oude Loo in 1684. On its grounds, he ordered the creation of one of the most prestigious houses of the time, with vast surrounding gardens. The prints give a good impression of the rich settings of this royal country house. Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), apart from making this print series, was also commissioned to design several statues for the gardens of Het Loo. Many bear explicit notes such as “observé en 1798” or “observations faites en 1796”, and combine landscape views with stratigraphic cross-sections and measured thicknesses. These localities do not correspond to any known published geological plates of the period, and the drawings display original analytical features—multiple views of the same ravine, corrections where earlier attempts are crossed out as “ce dessin n’est pas correct”, detailed French commentary and careful field-based dating—that show they are not copies from print but independent geological work. Interestingly, some of these sheets bear British watermarks.

A small subset of more schematic sheets (for example the idealised section of the Dudley coalfield entitled Surface of the Earth, and several didactic diagrams of folded or faulted strata) are clearly adapted from contemporary printed sources used by Deluc as teaching or reference material; one section explicitly cites Robert Bakewell’s Introduction to Geology (1815), others are derived from plates in Transactions of the Geological Society and comparable works. The Yale finding aid stresses the elder Deluc’s extensive geological travels in Switzerland, France, Italy, Germany, Spain and the British Isles (Devonshire, Wales, Birmingham, Ireland, etc.), but notes that “it is regrettable that the collection does not include more original material of this nature”. No material is recorded there for the English observations of 1796–1798 that are explicitly dated in the present collection. From the 1770s through the 1790s he travelled widely across Britain, making some of the earliest systematic geological observations in the country, at a time when geology was only beginning to separate itself from natural history and antiquarian curiosity. His notebooks—partly preserved in Yale MS 179—record journeys through Birmingham, Shrewsbury and Llangollen (1788), Devonshire (two voyages, one in 1806), Belgium, Holland, Westphalia and along the Rhine, as well as extensive work in the Alps and the Jura.

These travels took place before the formal institutionalisation of geology: Hutton’s classic work at Glen Tilt dates from the mid-1780s and the Geological Society of London was founded only in 1807. Deluc’s British observations therefore belong to the very earliest phase of scientific geology in Britain. The younger Deluc, who inherited his uncle’s collections and manuscripts, continued and elaborated this research; as Henry LaFarge noted in his overview of the Yale manuscripts, the younger’s scientific papers “deal primarily with geological and palaeontological subjects” and consist largely of working manuscripts enriched by extensive bibliographical notes. The writer gives a remarkably detailed account of a disastrous flood which, beginning in August 1780, altered the course of the main river, buried extensive cane fields in sand, ruined roads and levees, collapsed furnaces and boiling works, damaged the great house and outbuildings, and destroyed large quantities of sugar. He records the loss of enslaved people, livestock, and equipment, and describes the estate as rendered incapable of production for many months. Few surviving manuscripts convey with such technical precision the physical vulnerability of plantation infrastructure in late-eighteenth-century Saint-Domingue.

Of exceptional interest is the second part of the letter, which denounces the conduct of the colonial authorities. Instead of relief, the most heavily damaged plantations are subjected to forced public works, compelled to open a new road across their lands. The writer speaks of new corvées imposed “by the law of the strongest, supported by the bayonet,” and of threats of imprisonment, deportation to France, and confiscation of enslaved labourers for any refusal to obey. This striking testimony to the coercive machinery of colonial government, written more than a decade before the Haitian Revolution, offers rare insight into the tensions, abuses, and fragilities of the plantation system on the eve of its collapse.

In good condition.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0601/9248/9647/files/img005_e6e95c7d-b731-4b48-aad6-642a05e4c32d.jpg?v=1768213992
the-rallier-papers
The Rallier Papers

32 manuscripts, drawings and maps
of the engineer-geographers of Saint-Domingue (Haiti).

A major late 18th century collection of primary colonial source material on colonial Haiti, Dominica and pro-slavery discourse, assembled by royal colonial engineer Louis Rallier.

This collection brings together thirty-two manuscript parts that formed part of the working world of the French colonial engineers in Saint-Domingue.
