These later measures sought to preserve slaveholders’ claims over enslaved people transported to metropolitan France and to regulate the circumstances under which they could remain there.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003e\u003cspan lang=\"EN-GB\" style=\"mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;\"\u003eThe context is particularly significant. Valin (1695–1765) served as royal advocate and prosecutor at the Admiralty of \u003cb\u003eLa Rochelle\u003c\/b\u003e, one of France’s principal Atlantic ports and a major centre of the eighteenth-century slave trade.
