Two first German editions of descriptions of the Americas, with folding maps.
The first in this volume, Schilderung der Vereinigten Staaten von Nordamerika, was translated anonymously from Tableau du climat et du sol des États-Unis d'Amérique (Paris, 1803) and includes at the end a "Wörterbuch über die Sprache der Miamis" (Dictionary of the Miami language), which does not appear in the French original!
Reisen nach dem Französischen Guiana und nach Surinam was translated by the unidentified “Netto” from Collection de mémoires, correspondances officielles sur l'administration des colonies, et notamment sur la Guyane française et hollandaise (Paris, 1802) by . This edition includes a large folding map of the Guianas, which is a greatly improved version of the original, titled “Charte von dem Hollaendischen und Französischen Guiana nach einer handschriftlichen Charte von dem Capt. Simon Mentelle und nach der Charte von Buache, gezeichnet von J.B. Poirson” (Map of Dutch and French Guiana, based on a manuscript chart by Capt. Simon Mentelle and the map by Buache, drawn by J.B. Poirson). This description of the Guianas is substantially based on the reports and correspondence of Pierre-Victor, baron Malouet, who served as Intendant of French Guiana in the late 18th century. The work offers a detailed account of colonial administration, settlement efforts, and the challenges of plantation and slave economies in the region.

These titles were issued as the first and second parts of Bibliothek der neuesten und wichtigsten Reisebeschreibungen zur Erweiterung der Erdkunde, vol. 15 (Weimar, 1805). Each work is preceded by an editor’s introduction.

Condition: – Gumbinnen library stamp on series title page (present Goesev, Kaliningrad, Russia). Some faint browning in the first few leaves, minor marginal spotting and a repaired tear in the Guianas map, otherwise in very good condition.
