By the painter from Shiraz, Iran
Muhammed Rezai.
Two flowers drawings: a lily and a poppy.
Qajar Iran, ca. 1750-1850.
Opaque pigments and ink on paper, signed “Muhammed Rezai Shirazi” and “Muhammed Rezai”. 30,5 x 19,5 and 21,6 x 13,5 cm. Laid on paper mounts.
Two fine Qajar paintings of a lily and a rose, signed by renowned 19th century Iranian flower painter Muhammed Rezai. His works are kept in major museums worldwide but what is interesting about the two drawings we offer here, is that the one with the poppy (likely Papaver somniferum or opium poppy) is signed “Shirazi”, meaning he was from the Iranian city of Shiraz. We did not see other drawings by Rezai signed this way. Compare BM 1983,0315,0.1.24.
Possibly from an album because page numbers are inscribed in pencil in a modern hand on the mounts.
Condition: colours very bright. minor foxing, lily drawing minor browning, otherwise in very good condition.
